Education and the Pandemic
Math
Math schools are
Reading
According to an article in Ed Source "Only 42.1% of third-graders can read at grade level on the state’s latest Smarter Balanced test". Those children whose parents could not afford additional help fell further behind. Children are struggling to catch up which can affect their self-esteem. There has also been an increase of ADHD diagnosis, an effect of the pandemic.
What can I do as a Council Member?
I can work with the School Board and others in Education to foster a plan that will close the education gap.
Here are some solutions:
look for funding for an after-school tutoring center
locate a building
work with School Board
Research some solutions other schools are doing and make recommendations:
-adding 30mins to an 90 mins for Math
-allowing tutors work with kids at school
